Flacco's Interceptions: Second Interception VS Denver Broncos

Week 1 Baltimore Ravens vs Denver Broncos
12: 26 left in 4th Quarter Baltimore 17, Denver 42
4th and 1

The play call:

The Ravens are looking for a quick yard to pick up the first down, so Ray Rice runs a quick out route. Brandon Stokley and Torrey Smith run in routes on the other side of the field, with Dallas Clark and Marlon Brown both running go routes with outside releases.

What went wrong:

Flacco telegraphed the direction of the play the whole way. Though Rice seemed to be his second read, the play was clearly going to the right sideline, so the defense could easily adjust. Danny Trevathan, who was covering Rice, allowed no separation, as you can see above, and read the play perfectly.

Trevathan seemingly baited Flacco, who should have had better awareness to see Rice was covered. Right as the ball was thrown, Trevathan was ready to jump the route and get the easy interception, as seen in the above picture.

Most concerning here is the play call, which the Broncos were clearly expecting. The quick out was a staple for the Ravens under Cam Cameron and Jim Caldwell, especially in short yardage situations, and smart teams were always ready for it.

Expect more diverse play calling under Gary Kubiak, which should help make plays like this less common.

  1. Excellent observation. Upon reflection, I believe that the above is true. I will be watching to see what a Kubiak system will call. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
