Cover-1 - A coverage scheme featuring a single high safety with the rest of the secondary in man coverage.
4-3 Under - A variation of the 4-3 defensive front with the personnel shifted to the "open" or weak side of the offense.
Cover-0 - A pressure based defense designed to force the ball out quickly. "Zero" safety help in coverage.
Cover-1 - A coverage scheme featuring a single high safety with the rest of the secondary in man coverage.
Cover-2 - Two safeties split the deep portion of the field in half while the linebackers and corners cover underneath zones.
Cover 3 - A basic NFL defense with many variations, it breaks the field up into three deep zones and four underneath zones.
Cover-4 - A four-deep, three-under zone defense that plays out like man on the outside receivers.
Cover-6 - A quarter-quarter-half zone based defense that combines Cover-2 and Cover-4 rules.
Offense
BOB Pass Protection - A man-based protection scheme designed to keep running backs from blocking pass rush specialists.
Bubble Screen - A quick hitting outside breaking route (red) from a slot alignment.
Counter - A staple "power" running play designed to get the defense flowing in the wrong direction after the snap.
Dragon - A West Coast route combination that uses an in-line tight end running an out-breaking "drag" and an outside receiver running a slant/in option.
Flanker Drive - A West Coast pass play where the Z receiver runs a shallow cross and the in-line tight end runs a dig behind it.
Full Slide Pass Protection - An "area" scheme where the linemen all block their adjacent gaps (left or right).

Half Slide Pass Protection - Also called "Combo," half slide asks one side of the offensive line to block areas (zones) while the other side blocks individual men.
Mesh - A short route combination using two shallow crossing routes from opposite sides, which provides a natural pick.
Power O - A staple running play used at every level of the game.
Route Tree - A numbering system used to denote every route that a receiver might run in a given system. Below is a typical West Coast Offense route tree.
Smash - A standard Cover-2 beater consisting of a shallow route from #1 and a corner route from #2
Spot - A three level route combination that consists of a corner, curl, and flat route.
Tare - A combination used in short-yardage/redzone situations consisting of a 9-route, flat route, and "stick."
Texas - A route concept where a tight receiver clears out the middle of the field for the running-back to take advantage of a linebacker mismatch.
Wham - A run play that uses a horizontal trap block often from a full- or H-back
Zone Blocking - A rushing attack designed to stretch the defense by blocking laterally in unison and running based on defensive pursuit/positioning.
